If you are a speech pathologist with experience supporting children, young people or adults with intellectual disability, developmental disability, neurological conditions or emotional and behavioural needs, you already know how important communication is to wellbeing, relationships, choice and control. You may have worked with people whose behaviour is communicating something they cannot yet express in another way.

You have always known that behaviour is communication, and you have sat with people who had every reason to be understood and no reliable way to be. Positive Behaviour Support is the work of getting everyone around that person to act on what you already know.

PBS starts from something you already know: behaviour is communication. When someone does not have the words, skills or tools to say what they need, the need shows up another way. PBS is the work of understanding why, changing what is around the person rather than the person, and teaching the skills that meet that need another way.

It is a discipline, not a knack: backed by international research and practised in group homes, schools, workplaces, family homes and the community. Register for our information session to find out how your speech pathology experience could translate.
