Psychologist – Positive Behaviour Support

The Psychology - Lead Practitioner - will be part of the leadership team that enables provisional psychologists and other practitioners to provide high quality, evidence-based services to meet the needs of people with a disability and their families.

Key responsibilities of this role include

  • Provide direct service of positive behaviour support to people with complex behaviours of concern.
  • Provide supervision and professional development to psychologists and provisional psychologists in accordance with the Psychology Board (AHPRA) requirements.
  • Complete psychometric assessments to aid service provision and diagnosis.
  • Support team members to meet KPIs.
  • Provide consultancy to parent company PeopleKind Group, and it’s organisations, on complex behaviours of concern.
  • Develop and provide training to disability support workers, families and other stakeholders.
  • Participate as a member of the leadership team to promote continuous improvement and development of service provision.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in psychology. A master’s qualification in psychology and registration as a Psychology Board (AHPRA) approved supervisor or a willingness to gain registration as an approved supervisor.
  • At least three years’ experience as a registered psychologist.
  • A willingness to develop a strong understanding of the scientific and philosophical basis of positive behaviour support.

Desirable Criteria

  • Skills in the provision of positive behaviour support to people with highly complex support needs.
  • Meet the Advanced Practitioner capabilities as described by the Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework (July 2019) of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a transdisciplinary team, with experience in management of human and physical resources.
  • Experience in developing and delivering positive behaviour support training, coaching and support to non-clinical staff, service providers and families.
  • A willingness to join to a team of highly professional practitioners who enjoy a good laugh, a great working environment and a supportive culture.

  • Australian driver’s license 
  • Working with Children’s Check
  • NDIS Workers Screen Clearance

We are seeking dedicated Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners who are enthusiastic about working with people with a disability and who will be responsible for implementing evidence based, high quality, positive behaviour support to people with complex needs as part of our comprehensive person-centred support model. 

Your duties will include:

  • Working collaboratively with clients, their families and team members to develop environments that support individuals to achieve a quality of life that reflects and enhances their choice and control.
  • Using expertise to engage with clients, their families and support staff to develop a shared understanding of the reasons for behaviours of concern.
  • Using a range of approaches, resources, tools and assessments to provide expert opinion and be responsive to unique situations in order to inform problem solving and creative solutions to address individual needs.
  • Partnering with clients, their families, allied health professionals and support workers to provide support to individuals using a positive behaviour support approach to all aspects of service delivery, including providing training and coaching where appropriate.
  • Completing a functional behaviour assessment leading to the development of a person-centred positive behaviour support plan, in partnership with clients, their families, support workers and other stakeholders.

What you’ll need:

  • Tertiary degree in psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, social work, education or Nursing. Registration with AHPRA, SPA, or AASW is well regarded but not essential. 
  • An Australian driver’s licence, Working with Children Card, First Aid Certificate and a NDIS Workers Screening Check.
  • Experience working as a practitioner will be highly regarded but not necessary.
  • An interest in working with people with complex behaviours of concern.
  • A commitment to understanding of the principles and evidence-based practice regarding the delivery of positive behaviour support within diverse environments, including home and community.
  • Ability to work within a transdisciplinary model while managing and prioritising own workload to meet organisational needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to develop good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including residents, families and medical providers.
  • Ability to problem-solve, work autonomously and to think innovatively
  • Awareness and understanding of the National Standards for Disability Services and an understanding of the rights, needs and requirements of people with a disability from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Commitment to person centred approaches and contemporary principles of service delivery within a context of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
